PURPOSE: To liquefy efficiently coal by preventing the reduction of hydrogen partial pressure during hydrogenation reaction, by a method wherein coal which is ground and dried, is subjected to deoxygenation and preheating treatment, a paste of the resulting coal is prepared and the coal paste is hydrogenated.
CONSTITUTION: Raw coal A is ground and dried in a stage 1, and then fed to a stage 6 where the coal is contacted with nitrogen gas G supplied from a preheater 10a at a temp. of 200W400°C to deoxygenate the coal and at the same time to preheat the coal. Oxigen-contg. gases H such as H2O and CO2 are removed. A high- temperature deoxygenated coal powder obtd. from the stage 6 is fed to a stage 2 where a medium oil B is added to the coal powder to form a paste. Then the coal paste is fed to a reaction stage 4 by means of a pump 8, and hydrogenated with hydrogen C supplied through a preheater 10 to liquefy the coal. The liquefied coal produced in the state 4 is fractionated in a purification stage 5 to separate a heavy oil E, the medium oil B and a hight oil D. The medium oil B is recycled through a line 14. Part of waste gas produced in the stage 4 is passed through a washer 16 and discharged (F). The remaining part of the waste gas is recycled through a pump 18.
