To obtain a new liquid crystal compound, having a sufficiently large Δn, excellent in compatibility with another liquid crystal compound, especially in low temperature compatibility, chemically stable and useful for producing a liquid crystal composition or a liquid crystal display element.
A liquid crystal compound of formula I [R1 is a 1-10C alkyl, a 1-10C alkoxy, cyano or a halogen; R2 is a 1-5C alkyl and one methylene group in the R2 may be substituted with O; X1 and X2 are each H or a halogen; A and B are each a signal bond, a 1,4-phenylene ring or a 1,4-cylohexylene ring (these rings may be each substituted with halogen atom)], e.g. 4-[2-(4- propylphenyl)ethynyl]-1-(3-pentynl)benzene of formula II. A compound of formula I, e.g. a compound whose B is a signal bond or 1,4-phenylene ring, is obtained by brominating a 1-hydroxyalkyl, treating the brominated product with Mg to lead to a Grignard reagent, subsequently treating 4,4'-dibromobiphenyl with the reagent to lead to a compound of formula III and further reacting the resultant reaction product with a compound of formula IV.
