To provide a liquid crystal composition which meets at least one of characteristics such as the high upper-limit temperature of a nematic phase, the low lower-limit temperature of the nematic phase, low viscosity, greatly appropriate optical anisotropy, negatively large dielectric anisotropy, large specific resistance, high stability for ultraviolet light, and high stability for heat; and to also provide an AM element having, e.g., a large voltage retention and a large contrast ratio.
The liquid crystal composition contains a bicyclic compound as a first component having a negatively large dielectric anisotropy and fluorine on at least three lateral positions and specific bicyclic to tetracyclic compounds as second components having small viscosity and has negative dielectric anisotropy. The liquid crystal display element contains the composition.
