PURPOSE: To provide a liquid crystal element having excellent strength against pressing force and the like and excellent display characteristics, and to provide a liquid crystal compsn. and its production method for the liquid crystal element.
CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystal compsn. comprising a liquid crystal and a macromonomer which is separated from the liquid crystal phase and does not respond to an electric field is held between a pair of electrode substrates 1 at least one of which is transparent. After the phasel separation between the liquid crystal and the macromonomer is promoted by heating, the liquid crystal is horizontally oriented to obtain a liquid crystal element having a liquid crystal layer 3 comprising a liquid crystal region which is horizontally oriented and a macromonomer region which is separated from the liquid crystal phase and dispersed. Or a liquid crystal compsn. comprising a liquid crystal, a macromonomer which is separated from the liquid crystal in phase and does not respond to an electric field, and a polymn. initiator is held between a pair of electrode substrates at least one of which is transparent. After the phase separation between the liquid crystal and the macromonomer is promoted by heating, the liquid crystal is horizontally oriented. The macromonomer is then polymerized with the polymn. initiator to obtain a liquid crystal element having a liquid crystal layer comprising a liquid crystal region which is horizontally oriented, a polymer region of the macromonomer which is separated from the liquid crystal phase and dispersed.
