Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition which shows high response resulting from lowered viscosity without detriment to various characteristics (alignability and switching effects) as a liquid crystal material, a liquid crystal element made by using the same, and a process for producing the same.
SOLUTION: This composition contains a clathrate compound prepared by adding cyclodextrin or its derivative to a liquid crystal molecule in order to increase the free volume of that molecule. The liquid crystal elementis made by using the same. The production process comprises dissolving cyclodextrin or its derivative and a liquid crystal molecule, preparing a clathrate compound of the molecule from the solution, and adding this compound to a liquid crystal composition.
