Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound shown by a specific formula, showing a nematic liquid crystal phase in a wide temperature range, having a high Δεand Δn and low viscosity and high voltage retention ratio, useful for TFT.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of the formula (R1 is a 1-12C alkyl and one or two nonadjoining CH2 groups except ends in the group are substitutable with O, CO, OCO, COO or CH=CH; X and Z are each H, F or Cl; Y is a 1-4C perfluoroalkyl or perfluoroalkyloxy; one of A, B and C is a cyclohexene ring and the others are each a covalent bond, a cyclohexane ring or a benzene ring; (L), (m) and (n) are 0 or 1 with the proviso that n=0 when m=0) such as 1-(2-(4-trifluoromethylphenyl)ethyl)-4-(4-pentylcyclohexylcyclohexene. In the production, for example, a cyclohexanone derivative is treated with a Grignard reagent to give an alcohol, which is dehydrated to give the objective compound.
