To provide a liquid crystal device, capable of reducing deterioration of contrast due to optical anisotropy of a flexible substrate, and simplifying design and a manufacturing process.
In an upper liquid crystal cell 18, a major axis of a liquid crystal molecule 14 in the center of a liquid crystal layer and the lag phase axes 22, 26 of two flexible substrates 12, 13 are parallel to each other. Similarly also in a lower liquid crystal cell 19, the major axis of a liquid crystal molecule 30 in the center of the liquid crystal layer and the lag phase axes 28, 32 of two flexible substrates 15, 16 are parallel to each other. Further, the major axes of liquid crystal molecules 25, 29 adjacent to a polarizing plate 14 and a transmission axis 27 are parallel to each other.
