To obtain contamination preventing property which suppresses deposition of contaminants such as fat and sweat of fingers on a display screen and suppresses deposition of water even when the surface is scratched, by specifying the contact angle of a surface protective layer for water and the volume resistivity of the surface protective layer.
A liquid crystal display element described below is used. A liquid crystal dispersion polymer layer 2 having fine dispersion of at least a liquid crystal in a polymer matrix, and a surface protective layer 1 are successively formed on a conductive layer 6. The contact angle for water of the surface protective layer 1 is specified to ≥80° and the volume resistivity of the surface protective layer 1 is ≥1013Ω.cm at 20°C and 90% relative humidity(RH). The surface protective layer of the liquid crystal display element consists of a transparent and water-repellent polymer having high electric resistance. Namely, the contact angle for water of the surface protective layer is ≥80° and its volume resistivity is ≥1013Ω.cm at 20°C and 90% RH. Moreover, a transparent layer of high electric resistance is preferably formed between the conductive layer 6 and the liquid crystal dispersion polymer layer.
