A liquid crystal layer LC is held between a pair of substrates SUB1, SUB2 having alignment films ORI1, ORI2 on the respective inner faces. A first lower phase difference plate PD1, a second lower phase difference plate PD2 and a lower polarizing plate POL1 are laminated in this order on the outer face of the substrate SUB1, and upper phase difference plates (PD1, PD2) and an upper polarizing plate POL2 are laminated in this order on the substrate SUB2, with the absorption axes of the upper polarizing plate POL2 and the lower polarizing plate POL1 being arranged almost perpendicular to each other and with the alignment axis of the alignment film ORI1 of the substrate SUB1 and the absorption axis of the lower polarizing plate POL1 being arranged almost in parallel to each other.
