A pair of polarizing plates 4 and 5 are disposed sandwiching a liquid crystal cell 1 wherein a nematic liquid crystal is encapsulated between a pair of substrates 2 and 3 subjected to alignment treatment in the directions orthogonal to each other, a pair of visual field angle compensation films 6 and 7 formed by fixing the state of the molecules of a polymer liquid crystal uniformly hybrid-aligned in one direction are disposed between the liquid crystal cell 1 and the pair of polarizing plates 4 and 5, respectively, the absorption axes 4a and 5a of the pair of polarizing plates 4 and 5 are made perpendicular or parallel to the alignment treatment directions 2a and 3a of the substrates 2 and 3 on the respective sides of the polarizing plates of the liquid crystal cell 1 and the pair of visual field angle compensation films 6 and 7 are disposed so that the optical axis directions (the direction along the direction in which the major axis of the molecules of the polymer liquid crystal is projected and the direction in which the tilt angle to the film surface of the molecules of the polymer liquid crystal is formed) 6a and 7a thereof are essentially perpendicular to the alignment treatment directions 3a and 2a of the substrates 3 and 2 on the sides opposite to the visual field angle compensation films of the liquid crystal cell 1, respectively.
