In lighting a liquid crystal display panel 11 comprising a plurality of pixels from the rear side with an organic EL backlight 12 comprising at least a light emitting portion including an organic electroluminescence element, external light is detected by utilizing light receiving characteristics of the organic El element, and display luminance is adjusted according to the brightness of the surroundings with a luminance controlling portion 14.
