To provide a liquid crystal display device capable of surely setting the alignment direction of a liquid crystal.
The liquid crystal 20 is disposed between a display electrode 12 and a counter electrode 32, and alignment control electrodes 36 are mounted on the counter electrode 32 via an insulating layer 34. The alignment control electrodes 36 are formed one by one, on respective pixels with a predetermined pattern and are maintained at a voltage different from that of the counter electrode 32. In particular, polarity of the voltage applied to the alignment control electrode 36, with respect to the counter electrode 32, is preferably controlled corresponding to polarity of the voltage applied to the display electrode 12. In this way, a suitable electric field is formed between the alignment control electrode 36 and the counter electrode 32, and with this electric field the aligning direction of the liquid crystal 20 is controlled.
