The liquid crystal display device includes a front-side polarizer 20 and rear-side polarizer 22, a liquid crystal cell 10 arranged between them, and a front-side retardation region 16 and rear-side retardation region 18. The total of retardation Rth rear (λ) and retardation Rth front (λ) in the thickness direction of the retardation region is within a range capable of compensating Δnd (λ) in the black state, and satisfies front-member scattering intensity≤1/38,000. The rear-member scattering intensity, Rth front (λ), and Rth rear(λ) the following relationship (1) or (2): (1) rear-member scattering intensity>front-member scattering intensity and Rth front (λ)>Rth rear (λ); (2) rear-member scattering intensity<front-member scattering intensity and Rth front (λ)<Rth rear (λ).
