Title:
LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY DEVICE
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3452481
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an image of high quality which is free of coloration and has a wide field angle when a field angle is decreased or in the half-tone display by expanding the field angle in the right-left directions and top-bottom directions.
SOLUTION: Between a liquid crystal display element 1 and polarizing plates 4 and 5, phase difference plates 2 and 3 are arranged which have a relation na=nc>nb between their main refractive indexes and also have the direction of the main refractive index nb slanted from the normal direction of the surface clockwise or counterclockwise around the direction of the main refractive index na nearly parallel to the surface as an axis and the direction of the main refractive index nc slanted from a direction nearly parallel to the surface. The liquid crystal layer 8 is so set that the degree of variation of the ordinary light refractive index of the liquid crystal material with wavelength or the degree of variation of extraordinary light refractive index with the wavelength is within a range wherein no screen coloration depending upon the field angle is produced. The liquid crystal layer 8 is divided into areas 8a and 8b having different alignment states in a pixel and those areas 8a and 8b are provided at different rates.
