To provide a liquid crystal display device having a backlight control device conducting dynamic control at current light control and static control at burst light control, of which the discontinuous point of brightness is avoided and the adjustment range of luminance is not restricted, if there exist discontinuous points in luminance in the burst light control due to characteristics of an arc tube or characteristics of an arc tube drive circuit.
When discontinuous points in luminance arise in the burst light control, control is made so that the static control in that section is combined with the current light control, or switched to each other. Further, in the case that discontinuity in luminance remains in this combination and switching control, the discontinuity in luminance is eliminated by controlling the contrast and brightness of an image signal.
