Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain a liq. crystal display device enabling halftone display and having a high response speed by using a compd. contg. an arom. hetero ring contg. N atoms as constituent elements. CONSTITUTION:An optically active compd. represented by formula I (where R<1> is 6-16C alkyl or alkoxy, R<2> is 4-12C alkyl and * shows optical activity) is used. This optically active compd. used may be (S)-4-(5-octyloxypyrimidin-2-yl) benzoic acid-4-[1-(trifluoromethyl)pentyl-oxycarbonyl]phenyl ester or (S)-4-(5- decyloxypyrimidin-2-yl) benzoic acid-4-[1-(trifluoromethyl) pentyloxycarbonyl] phenyl ester. Halftone display as well as light and dark displays is enabled and a very short response time is ensured.
