PURPOSE: To obtain the display element having liquid crystal oriented films capable of uniformly orienting liquid crystal molecules in a specified direction without making rubbing operation by providing these oriented films with first oriented films having striped ruggedness on the surfaces and second oriented films consisting of an org. compd. having the molecular axes unified in parallel with the groove direction of the ruggedness.

CONSTITUTION: Respective substrates 1 are provided with transparent electrodes 2 on their liquid crystal 3 side and are formed with the first oriented films 4 having the striped ruggedness or the striped ruggedness and the saw tooth- shaped ruggedness in a direction perpendicular to this ruggedness on the surfaces of the transparent electrodes 2. Further, the first oriented films 4 are provided thereon with the second oriented films 5 consisting of the org. compd. unified in the molecular axes in parallel with the groove direction of the striped ruggedness. As a result, the orientation directions and pretilt angles of liquid crystals are controllable by the ruggedness formed at the first oriented films 4 and the liquid crystals are further strongly oriented in the main chain direction of the org. compds. constituting the second oriented films 5 by the interaction of the liquid crystal molecules and the molecules of the second oriented films.
