This liquid crystal display element is provided with a pair of electrode substrates 5, and a liquid crystal cell 1 of a smectic liquid crystal material which is held between a pair of the electrode substrates 5 and has a thresholdless voltage-transmittance characteristic. The liquid crystal display element is further provided with, in particular, an alignment control circuit 14 for applying, in a non-picture display state, a constant alignment voltage having an absolute value larger than zero at a 70% of a saturation voltage or lower which maximizes the transparency of the smectic liquid crystal material.
