To provide a PLCC (polymer/liquid crystal composite) mode liquid crystal display (LCD) element, in particular the LCD element which is also suitable for simple matrix driving and has excellent sharpness, and to provide a method for manufacturing the same.
The LCD element is constructed by interposing a (polymer/liquid crystal (LC)) composite between a pair of substrates with an electrode attached thereto wherein at least one out of the pair is provided with a transparent electrode. The (polymer/LC) composite comprises a nematic LC dispersed in a polymer matrix (PM) wherein both form continuous phases respectively and in which the refractive index of the LC varies corresponding to voltage application so as to exhibit one state in which refractive indexes of the LC and the PM nearly coincide with each other and light is transmitted and the other state in which those do not coincide with each other and light is scattered As the PM, a copolymer of vinyl ether, a fumarate and another monomer (preferably an acrylate) is used. The LCD is manufactured by: holding a composition containing the nematic LC and the individual monomer components in a uniformly dissolved state between the pair of the substrates with the electrode attached thereto wherein at least one out of the pair is provided with the transparent electrode; and exposing the the composition to light.
