To provide a liquid crystal display element and a method for manufacturing the liquid crystal display element having a stable R (reverse)-TN (twisted nematic) state and achieving an RTN mode.
A liquid crystal display element 1 includes: a first substrate 2 subjected to an alignment treatment in a first direction; a second substrate 3 subjected to an alignment treatment in a second direction that forms an angle of 70° to 110° in a first rotation direction with respect to the first direction, observed in a normal direction on the first substrate 2 side; and a liquid crystal layer 5 in which liquid crystal molecules 4 are twisted in the first rotation direction to give twisted alignment between the substrates. The liquid crystal layer 5 contains a chiral substance that imparts to the liquid crystal molecules 4 a revolving property in a second rotation direction opposite to the first rotation direction, along a direction from the first substrate 2 to the second substrate 3 when observed in the normal direction on the first substrate 2 side; and the liquid crystal layer 5 also contains aligning means for the above described twisted alignment of the liquid crystal molecules 4. The aligning means comprises a polymer obtained by polymerizing a polymerizable substance in the liquid crystal layer 5 and forms a polymer layer 10.
