Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide a light-scattering type liquid crystal display element which uses a specific compound as a liquid crystal material constituting the light- modulating layer, thus maintains or improves its driving properties at a lowered voltage, shows more whitened and brightened expression properties and gives bright images in no need of a polarizing plate.
CONSTITUTION: In a liquid crystal display element having the light-modulating layer between a couple of base plates having a transparent electrode layer where at least one of the base plates is clear, the light-modulating layer comprises a liquid crystal composition of (A) a compound selected from formulas I and II (R1, R2 are each a 1-9C straight-chain alkyl; R3 is a 2-9C straight-chain alkyl), (B) a compound selected from formulas III, IV (R4 is a 2-9C straight-chain alkyl, alkoxy; R5 is an 2-9C straight-chain alkyl, alkenyl; ring A is a benzene ring, a cyclohexane ring)and (C) a compound of formula V (R8 is a 2-7C alkyl; X1-X3 are each H, F) and a clear solid substance. It is preferred that the light- modulating layer has a three-dimensional network structure of a transparent solid substance in the continuous layer of the liquid crystal matrix.
