Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain inexpensively a liquid crystal display element having noncolored light background and a wide view field angle by disposing two optical delay plates between a second substrate and a second polarizing plate and specifying a sum or retardations of the two optical delay plates with respect to the retardation of a liquid crystal cell. CONSTITUTION:Two optical delay plates 10, 11 are disposed between a second substrate 1' and a second polarizing plate 4, and a sum of retardations of the two optical delay plates 10, 11 is regulated to R0X0.8 to R0X1.2 with respect to a retardation R0=DELTAn.d.cos<2>theta for the liquid crystal cell 5, wherein d is a distance between the first substrate 1 and the second substrate 1', theta is a tilt angle of the liquid crystal compsn., and DELTAn is the birefringence rate of the liquid crystal compsn. If the value of the sum is less than a value in the above regulated range, a difference between the spectral transmission factors for a voltage impressed stage and voltage unimpressed stage becomes too small. If the sum exceeds said range, the spectral transmission factor becomes large for only a specified wavelength. Thus, a liquid crystal display element having a noncolored light background and a wide view field angle is obtd. inexpensively.
