PURPOSE: To obviate an erroneous display by static electricity without entailing an increase in electric power consumption.
CONSTITUTION: The peripheral parts of transparent substrates 11, 12 are sealed by a sealing member 18 and a liquid crystal 17 is encapsulated therein. Display electrodes 13 are formed on the inside surface of the substrate 11 and a common electrode 15 is formed on the inside surface of the substrate 12. This sealing member 18 is constituted by incorporating particles of ZnO, SiC sintered compact, etc., having varistor characteristics into an epoxy adhesive. The resistance value between electrodes 13 and 15 past the sealing member 18 is extremely high under a driving voltage but the resistance value is drastically lowered by the electrification of the static electricity higher than a driving voltage.
