PURPOSE: To enable multicolor displaying and to display the same part in different colors by providing a polarizing plate which has the same polarizing direction with liquid crystal on the top side of the 1st layer and a transmitting and reflecting plate which is classified by colors on the reverse side of the 2nd layer.
CONSTITUTION: When a voltage is impressed between transparent electrodes 13a and 13b to turn on only the 1st layer I, incident light is polarized by the polarizing plate 18 in a polarizing direction X, and then transmitted through the 1st layer I and further transmitted through the 2nd layer II while absorbed spectrally by red dichroic coloring matter 15'; and the light is reflected by the transmitting and reflecting plate 19 and then transmitted through the 2nd layer II, the 1st layer I, and polarizing plate 18 again, so that a red display is made at a part A and a red display is made at a part B. Further, when the voltage is impressed between transparent electrodes 13c and 13d to turn on the 2nd layer II, the incident light is polarized in the polarizing direction X by the polarizing plate 18, and then absorbed by the black dichroic coloring matter 5 of the 1st layer I and not transmitted through a liquid crystal display element 11. Consequently, colors of the multicolor display are switched and displayed, so a diverse display with many colors can be made.
