Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain a display element of a wide visual field which is colorless and bright in the background and has a high contrast by superposing two sheets of liquid crystals, providing polarizing plates to both sides thereof, and specifying the sizes and directions of twist angles as well as retardation. CONSTITUTION:The 1st and 2nd liquid crystal cells 5, 6 are superposed and the 1st and 2nd polarizing plates 3, 4 are superposed on both sides thereof. The sizes of the twist angles psi1, psi2 of the two liquid crystal cells 5, 6 are set in approximately the same 180-270 deg. range and the rotating directions thereof are reversed. The values of the retardation DELTAn.d.cos<2>theta, where DELTAn is a double refractive index, (d) is the thickness of the cells, theta is the pretilt angle, are set at 0.3-1.0mum, which values are nearly the same with the liquid crystal cells 5, 6. The two liquid crystal cells 5, 6 are thereby provided with the optically complementary properties and, therefore, the transmitted light has no dependency on wavelengths and the display element of the wide visual field angle which is colorless and has the high contrast is obtd.
