To provide a liquid crystal display which has a wide field angle and a good display state, by preventing nonuniformity of the distance between substrates in a display part and the problem of the viewing-angle dependence.
A first insulation film 3, provided with a predetermined protrusions which have tilted surfaces in at least two or more directions is formed, pixel electrodes 4 are formed so as to maintain the shapes of the protrusions, and inclinations are given in two or more directions to the electric line of force near the substrate surface. When a voltage which is lower than a predetermined voltage by which liquid crystal molecules in a liquid crystal 10 having negative dielectric anisotropy are aligned to be almost horizontal is applied, the direction of alignment of the liquid crystal molecule is regulated in two or more directions. Moreover, the substrate surface is planarized by a second insulation film 5 formed on the pixel electrode 4. The second insulation film can be used as a vertical alignment film. Furthermore, the boundaries of the alignment of the liquid crystal molecules are regulated more clearly, by exposing the apex of the protrusion of the pixel electrode 4 from the second insulation film 5.
