Liquid crystal light valves 25a, 25b, 25c enhance cooling effect of the liquid crystal device 80 by using a birefringent material with high thermal conductivity for an incident side dust prevention plate 74a. In addition, since a micro-lens array 72a is arranged on a light incident side part of the liquid crystal device 80, utilization efficiency of incident light is enhanced. Furthermore, the liquid crystal display prevents phase action whose polarization state changes for a light flux passing the liquid crystal device 80 from being given by using an isotropic refraction material for the incident side dust prevention plate 74b.
