Title:
LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3703818
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display in which background colors and the surface state of the liquid crystal display can be varied by disposing a wavelength selecting filter in the upper side of the display screen, good matching with the design and colors of the outer casing can be obtained, and both of the back light and the reflected light can be efficiently used to increase the use efficiency of light.
SOLUTION: An upper wavelength selecting filter 1 selectively transmits light only at specified wavelengths and reflects or absorbs the rest of light. The LCD 2 has such a structure that a liquid crystal is sealed in the gap between opposing substrates and the arrangement state of the liquid crystal molecules and phase changes are induced by an electric field, a current or increase in temperature to change the optical properties such as interference of light, scattering, diffraction, optical rotatory, selective scattering, absorption or the like in the liquid crystal state. A lower wavelength selecting filter 3 reflects light at specified wavelengths and absorbs or transmits the rest of light. A backlight 4 illuminates the LCD2 which is a non-light emitting display element in a dark place. At least part of the wavelength region where the lower wavelength selecting filter reflects light and part of the wavelength region where the backlight 4 emits light are included in the wavelength region where the upper wavelength selecting filter transmits light.
