Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display for further improving contrast change, a coloring phenomenon, an inverted phenomenon or the like produced dependent on a visual angle, in particular, effectively improving the coloring phenomenon of a liquid crystal screen dependent on the visual angle.
SOLUTION: Three main refractive indexes na, nb and nc of a refractive index ellipsoid have relation of na=nc>nb between a liquid crystal display element 1 and polarizing plates 4 and 5. Phase difference plates 2 and 3 inclining the direction of the main refractive index nb from a direction of the normal line of a surface clockwise or counterclockwise by regarding the direction of the main refractive index na or nc substantially parallel to the surface as an axis and inclining the direction of the main refractive index nc or na from the direction substantially parallel to the surface are arranged. A combination condition of an average alkyl chain length of the liquid crystal material of a liquid crystal layer 8, a change degree for the wavelength of a normal light refractive index no of the liquid crystal material, and a change degree for the wavelength of an abnormal light refractive index ne of the liquid crystal material is set in a range not producing screen coloring dependent on the visual angle.
