Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain a thin type high-contrast liquid crystal electro-optical device by using phase difference films as optical compensation. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal electro-optical device is provided with a liquid crystal panel 7 constituted by holding a nematic liquid crystal, which has positive dielectric anisotropy and contains an added rotary polarizing material, between a couple of opposingly arranged electrode substrates and forming a spiral structure wherein liquid crystal molecules are twisted in the thickness direction by 180-270 deg. and 1st and 2nd films 8 and 9 which are drawn and have refractive index anisotropy; and the angle between the drawing axis direction of the 1st film 8 and the drawing axis direction of the 2nd film 9 and the retardation values of the 1st and 2nd films 8 and 9 are within specific ranges.
