Abstract:
To provide a liquid crystal element which exhibits excellent liquid crystal orientation even when a liquid crystal orientation film is unused.SOLUTION: A liquid crystal element comprises base materials 11, 12, and an optical anisotropic layer 13 which is an organic layer arranged adjacent to the base materials. The organic layer is formed using a liquid crystal composition that contains a component (A) and a component (B). (A): liquid crystal. (B): a polymer having a polymerizable group having a carbon-carbon unsaturated bond and at least one orientation group selected from the group consisting of a partial structure and an optical orientation group expressed by formula (1), the polymer having, in at least one of the orientation group and a part different from the orientation group, at least one polar group selected from the group consisting of a silanol group, an alkoxysilyl group, an alcoholic hydroxyl group, a thiol group, a carbonic acid group, an amino group, a sulfonate group and a phosphate group. *-L1-R1-R2-R3-R4 (1).SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
