To provide a liquid crystal element which has excellent transmissivity and is easily manufactured, and also to provide a method for manufacturing the same.
A transparent base board 111, on which an alignment film 112 is formed, and a transparent base board 115, on which a transparent electrode 121 and an alignment film 114 are formed, are bonded together via a seal 117 so that the alignment film 112 faces the alignment film 114 to prepare a large-size liquid crystal element 1a having a polymer liquid crystal layer 113 between the transparent base boards 111 and 115. Then, needlelike electrode terminals 50 in the desired area of which electric lines of force converge are made adjacent to the polymer liquid crystal layer 113 to apply voltage between the needlelike electrode terminals 50 and the transparent electrode 121. Then, ultraviolet rays 55 are radiated to harden the polymer liquid crystal layer 113, and then the layer concerned is divided into chips to gain the liquid crystal elements 1 in which the polymer liquid crystal layer 113 has a prescribed refractive index distribution.
