PURPOSE: To obtain titled element capable of preventing reversing phenomenon, and maintaining the writing state of a picture element which is written in accordance with an information signal to one frame or one field by disposing the picture element contg. the liquid crystal compd., etc., having a specific optically active group, and by impressing writing signal, and effecting time-sharing driving.
CONSTITUTION: The picture element contg. the liquid crystal compd. having the optically active group shown by formula I or the liquid crystal composition contg. said compd. is arranged in plural lines, and the writing signals are impressed in each lines of the plural lines of the picture element. The writing state of the image element in the line which is impressed the writing signal is effected the time-sharing driving which has a system of maintaining the writing state until impressing the writing signal of a following period. In the formula I, R* is 4W12C alkyl group having an asymmetric carbon atom, R1 is 1W18C alkyl or alkoxy group, (l) is 1 or 2, (m) is 0 or 1, (n) is 0 or 1. Thus, the reversing phenomenon which appears at the time of switching and displaying can be effectively prevented.
