A liquid crystal display element 20 having a liquid crystal layer 27 between a pair of substrates 29a and 29b has a pair of plastic substrates 21a and 21b, inorganic gas barrier films 23a and 23b formed on at least one surface of the plastic substrates 21a and 21b and hard coat films 22a and 22b laminated on the surfaces of the inorganic barrier films 23a and 23b by sintering. Further ITO films 24a and 24b and alignment layers 25a and 25b are formed on the surface of one of the plastic substrates 21a and 21b. The substrates 29a and 29b are stuck to each other so that the surfaces of the ITO films 24a and 24b side of the substrates 29a and 29b are opposed to each other and the liquid crystal layer 27 is sealed by a sealing material 26.
