Abstract:
PURPOSE:To increase the threshold electric field and to obtain a sufficient memory characteristic by forming underlying dielectric layers consisting of polar force components of specific surface energy under dielectric layers for orientation of substrates. CONSTITUTION:Transparent electrodes 2a, 2b respectively consisting of ITO, etc., are formed on the opposite surfaces of a pair of transparent substrates 1a, 1b. The underlying dielectric layers 3a, 3b respectively of >=20 dyn/cm polar force components of the surface energy are formed on the electrode forming surfaces of the substrates 1a, 1b over nearly the entire surface of the substrates. The dielectric layers 4a, 4b for orientation to uniaxially orient liquid crystal molecules in the normal direction of the layers are formed on the underlying dielectic layers 3a, 3b over the entire surface thereof. The threshold electric field is increased in this way and the bistability, i.e. the memory characteristic are improved.
