NEW MATERIAL:The 4-(4'-substituted benzoyloxy)benzoic acid alkyl ester of formula I (R1 is 1W10C alkyl or alkoxyl; R2 is 1W10C alkyl).
EXAMPLE: 4-(4'-Hexyloxybenzoyloxy)benzoic acid methyl ester.
USE: A component of a liquid crystal composition. It has small but positive dielectric anisotropy, broad liquid crystal temperature range, and excellent compatibility to the other liquid crystal substances. Addition of only a small amount of the compound to a liquid crystal composition raises the clear point without increasing the driving voltage. Since the anisotropy of refractive index Δn is as large as that of the cyanobiphenyl liquid crystal, a liquid crystal composition with little problems of interference color can be obtained.
PROCESS: The compound of formula I can be prepared by reacting the 4-substituted benzoic acid of formula II with a halogenation agent such as thionyl chloride, phosphorus pentachloride, etc., and reacting the resultant compound of formula III with the compound of formula IV in an inert basic organic solvent such as pyridine.
