Abstract:
PURPOSE:To detect the magnitude of pressure acting on a movable transparent plate while resisting against a resilient member. CONSTITUTION:A fixed transparent plate 2 and a movable transparent plate 3 are disposed oppositely, through a gap filled with a liquid crystal layer 5 of cholesteric or chiral nematic liquid crystal. The movable transparent plate 3 is supported by the fixed transparent plate 2 through a resilient member 4. When pressure is applied to the movable transparent plate 3 while resisting against the resilient member 4, the movable transparent plate 3 inclines against the fixed transparent plate 2 to vary the gap between the plate 2 and the plate 3. Consequently, the spiral pitch in the liquid crystal 5 is varied to cause positional variation of disclination line D and the magnitude of pressure acting on the movable transparent plate 3 is detected based on the positional variation of the disclination line D.
