Abstract:
PURPOSE: To improve image quality by respectively irradiating respective liquid crystal display panels displaying a picture reflected and transmitted by the dichroic surface of a dichroic prism with each light obtained by splitting light source light into S and P polarizing components by a polarizing beam splitter.
CONSTITUTION: The light from the light source 20 is split into the S polarizing component and the P polarizing component by the polarizing beam splitter 21, and a liquid crystal display panel 23 for green is irradiated with the light of the P polarizing component through a filter 22, and the respective liquid crystal display panels 29 and 30 for red and blue are irradiated with the light of the S polarizing component through the dichroic mirrors 24 and 25 and total reflecting mirrors 26-28. The picture in respective colors displayed on the respective liquid crystal display panels 23, 29 and 30 is synthesized in a color picture by the dichroic prism 31 and is enlarged and projected on a screen by a projecting lens 32. Then wavelength light in respective colors coincides with the polarizing characteristic of the dichroic prism 31, so that spectroscopic characteristic is improved.
