NEW MATERIAL:A compound shown by formula I (R1 is straight-chain or branched 1W18C alkyl; R2 is optically active halogenated alkyl or optically active halogenated aralkyl; n and o are 1W3 and n+o is ≤6; X is single bond, -O-, -COO-, -O-COO- or -OCO-; Y is -COO-, -OCO-, -N=CH-, etc.; Z is -COO-CH2-, -O-CH2-, -O-COO-CH2-, etc.; Ph' is 1,4-phenylene, 1,4-phenylene obtained by replacing benzene ring with halogen, cyano or nitro).
USE: Readily taking a chiral smectic C phase and useful as a ferroelectric liquid crystal material and a memory type display element of heat writing, laser writing, etc.
PREPARATION: For example, a benzoic acid derivative shown by formula II is treated with thionyl chloride to give an acid chloride, which is reacted with a compound shown by formula III in a basic solvent to give a compound shown by formula I wherein Y is -COO-.
