To obtain a new chemically stable liquid crystalline alkenylcyclohexene derivative, having a large elastic constant ratio and excellent in compatibility with other liquid crystalline compounds, especially in the compatibility at a low temperature.
This liquid crystalline alkenylcyclohexene is expressed by formula I (R1 is a 1-10C alkyl or alkyloxy, a 1-4C alkyl halide or halogenated alkyloxy, etc.; R2 is H or 1-3C alkyl; Rings A and B are each a 1,4-phenylene ring or trans-1,4-cyclohexylene ring; Z is a single bond, 1,4-phenylene ring, a trans-1,4-cyclohexylene ring or 1,2-ethylene; (p) is 2-4; (q) is 0 or 1], e.g. 4-(4'- fluorobiphenyl-4-yl)-1-(3-butenyl)cyclohexene. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a compound of formula III (L is Li, MgBr, etc.) with a cyclohexanone derivative of formula II to obtain an alcohol body or formula IV, which is dehydrolyzed. A liquid crystal composition is obtained having sharp characteristics and stability by using the compound of formula I.
