PURPOSE: To form polyurethane and polycarbonate which have liquid crystallinity, improved flow properties in a melt, and improved chemical resistance and flame resistance by bringing to reaction liquid crystalline bis- chlorocarbonic ester having a specific structure and a specific di(secondary diamine) or dihydroxy compound.
CONSTITUTION: Liquid crystalline N-alkyl polyurethane and polycarbonate having structure units corresponding to the formula IV are formed by reacting bis- chlorocarbonic acid which is 4-hydroxybenzoic acid-(4'-hydroxyphenyl) ester corresponding to formula I (R1, R2, R3 and R4 denote, independently of one another, hydrogen, a halogen atom or 1-6C alkyl group) and di(secondary diamine) or dihydroxy compound corresponding to formula III. In formulas III and IV, R1 to R4 are the same as the formula I; X is oxygen or an N(R) group, R is 1-4C alkyl group, etc.; A is optionally the bivalent residue, etc., of aromatic hydrocarbon interrupted by an oxygen and/or a silicon atom and/or the 1-4C alkyl group.
