Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject film comprising an oriented polymer matrix and a liquid-crystalline compound, not requiring an orienting film, a spacer, and a heat-resistant electrode substrate in a liquid crystal display device, enabling to use a plastic as an electrode substrate, and excellent in the contrasts of images.
SOLUTION: This liquid-crystalline compound-containing film comprises (A) an oriented polymer matrix [e.g. the polymer of (A1) a (liquid-crystalline) discotic compound having a triphenylene group, a chemical structure of the formula (Z is CH2, O, S, etc.), etc., as a fundamental skeleton and a polymerizable group], and (B) a liquid-crystalline compound such as a smectic liquid-crystalline compound, a (chiral) nematic liquid-crystalline compound, a cholesteric liquid-crystalline compound or a (counter) ferrodielectric liquid- crystalline compound. The film is obtained e.g. by forming a layer comprising the mixture of the components A1, and B, heating the formed layer to orient the component A1, and subsequently giving optical or thermal energy to the oriented component A1 to polymerize the component A1.
