PURPOSE: To provide a new liquid crystal compound containing a fluorine- substituted alkenyl group, having a high ratio of elastic constants (K33/K11) and improved in solubility in another liquid crystal material at lower temperatures.
CONSTITUTION: This compound is expressed by formula I [Q is CF3, CF2H or CFH2; A1 to A3 are each trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, a 1,4-phenylene in which one or more H of the six-membered ring may be substituted with F, Cl or CN, prydine-2,5-diyl or 1,3-pyrimidine-2,5-diyl; ring B is a 1,4-phenylene which may be substituted in the rigid direction or trans-1,4-cyclohexylene; Z1 to Z3 are each a covalent bond, CH=CH, C=C, OCO, COO, CH2O, OCH2, (CH2)2 or (CH2)4; (1) and (m) are each 0 to 5; (o) and (p) are each 0 or 1; L1 and L2 are each H, F or Cl; L3 is a halogen, CN, OCF3, OCF2H, H, a 1 to 10C alkyl, a 2 to 10C alkenyl or Q], e.g. (E)-4-[trans-4-(fluorobutenyl)cyclohexyl]- benzonitrile.
