To obtain a new crystalline compound comprising a specific spiro ring in its molecule, capable of providing a negative dielectric constant anisotropy value large in absolute value, proper refractive index anisotropy, small elastic constant, lower viscosity, good compatibility, and chemical/physical stability, and useful for liquid crystalline elements.
This compound is shown by formula I [R1 and Y1 are each a 1-30C alkyl, etc,; A1 to A5 are each e.g. a group of formula II (W1 to W4 are each H, a halogen, etc., noted that the whole of them are not H simultaneously, and when one of them is other than H, additional other one connected to the same carbon atom is also other than H); and (a1) to (a5) are each 0 or 1], e.g. 1,1-difluoro-2-{2-[trans-4-(2,3- difluoro-4-ethoxy phenyl) cyclohexyl]ethyl}-7-n-propylspiro[3.5] nonane. This example compound is obtained by reacting a compound of formula III with that of formula IV to thereby obtain a compound of formula V, subjecting it to dehydration and hydrogen addition in this order, and turning it into an oxo-compound and followed by difluorination.
