NEW MATERIAL:A liquid crystalline compound expressed by formula I (R and R' are 1-18C alkyl; X1 is direct bonding, O, S, C≡C, OCO or COO; A1 to A3 are 1,4-phenylene substitutable with 1-4 pieces of F or Cl; X2 is C≡C or CH2CH2; (m) and (n) are 0 or 1 with a proviso that at least one is 1; X3 is direct bonding, O, S, OCO or COO; with a proviso that X1 is C≡C in a case of m=0 and n=1).
USE: Used as a liquid crystalline compound exhibiting a smectic C phase useful as a component for making anisotropy of dielectric constant of a liquid crystalline composition negative or a component expanding a temperature range of the smectic C phase.
PREPARATION: For instance, a compound expressed by formula II (Y is Cl, Br or I) is allowed to react with benzoyl chloride and phenyl borate, in turn, and a resultant compound expressed by formula III is halogenated, then hydrolyzed with a base, thus a compound expressed by formula IV (Z is Br or I) is obtained. Said compound is made to react with an alkylation agent expressed by the formula R'Y' (Y' is Cl or Br, etc.) and subjected to a reaction with a compound expressed by formula V to afford the objective compound corresponding to formula I (expressed by formula VI).
