PURPOSE: To easily and quickly detect a component in a liquid, especially, the quantity of urea in alcoholic drinks by providing a cell equipped with a layer having an ion exchanging function, coloring matter layer, enzyme layer, and sample staying layer, light source, and photodetector.
CONSTITUTION: An ion exchange resin layer 1 is constituted of, for example, H type cation exchange resin layer 1a, OH type anion exchange resin layer 1b, and filter paper 1c. The pH of a sample is adjusted to about 6-7 through the ion exchange between the cation of the sample dropped onto the layer 1a and between the anion of the sample in the layer 1b. The sample passed through the layer 1 dissolves the coloring matter of a coloring matter layer 2. When Sake (Japanese wine) is used as the sample, the filtrate passed through the layer 1 becomes 6-7 in pH. Therefore, when bromothymol blue is used as the coloring matter, the filtrate passed through the layer 2 becomes yellow and decomposition of urea and production of ammonia occur in a fixed urease layer 3 and the color of the filtrate changes to a green to blue color. The color-changed liquid stays in a sample staying layer 4 and the color- changed state of the light from an LED light source 5 is monitored by means of a photodiode 6. As a result, the urea contained in the Sake can be measured in about five minutes.
