To make it possible to suck and discharge a liquid discharged to a cap member by eliminating clogging inside a flow channel communicating with a cap member contactable with or separable from a liquid discharge means in a liquid discharge device.SOLUTION: A liquid discharge device is equipped with a cap member 10a receiving a liquid discharged from a liquid discharge means 8. The cap member and a suction means 30 sucking the liquid in a flow channel toward a discharge port 22 of the flow channel 20 are connected to the flow channel 20, and a detection means 70 detecting a pressure value in the flow channel is also connected thereto. The liquid discharge device carries out a first sucking operation driving the suction means in such a state as opening the cap member in atmosphere. Further, the device performs a sucking operation higher in suction performance than the first sucking operation when the pressure value detected by the detection means in the first sucking operation is less than a prescribed pressure value.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 9
