PURPOSE: To make it possible to alter the size of each ink droplet to a large extent, by providing two kins of drive means for generating different displacements and a means for controlling the displacement amount of one of two drive means to the electromechanical converter element in an ink jet head.
CONSTITUTION: A means for applying voltage V1 in a direction opposite to the polarization direction of the piezoelectric element 11 provided in an ink jet head, a means for applying voltage V2 in the same direction as the polarization direction and a means for changing voltage V1 corresponding to the indication signal of an ink dot size are provided to said piezoelectric element 11. In this case, the size of the ink droplet emitted from the nozzle of the head can be altered to a large extent by applying only voltage V1 or both of voltages V1, V2 to the piezoelectric element 11. As mentioned above, displacement corresponding to the sum of driving force by two drive means can be imparted to an electromechanical converter means and the variable range of the dot size of the recording liquid droplet emitted from the jet head can be enlarged.
