A refill unit 100 comprises a plurality of types of ink cartridge 102, a first detector 153 which can identify the type of the ink cartridge 102, a plurality of cases 103 assigned to various ink cartridges 102, respectively, a first sensor 107 for detecting the first detector 153, a gate 109 which is changed to a first posture or a second posture for forbidding or permitting insertion of the ink cartridge 102 into the case 103, a drive mechanism for changing the posture of the gate 109, and a control section 60 for changing the posture of the gate 109 based on the output from the first detector 153.
