PURPOSE: To obtain living random copolymers by the living anionic copolymerization of a mixture of a methacrylic monomer and an acrylic monomer with the use of a combination of an initiator system with a specific ligand.
CONSTITUTION: Living random (meth)acrylic copolymers correspond to formula I or formula II (wherein P and co show the copolymerized state of at least two basic comonomers A and B; A and B are each methacrylic, acrylic or a maleimide and at least one of the basic comonomers is an acrylic or methacrylic monomer; M is an alkali(ne earth)metal originating from an initiator; the ligand is a nonnitrogeous macrocyclic complexant of the formula: R1(OR=)mOM1 (OR2)mOM1 or M1(OR2)mOM1 (wherein M1 is an alkali metal; R1 is 1-6C alkyl, arylalkyl of 1-6C alkyl or alkylaryl of 1-6C alkyl; R2 is 2-4C alkylene; m is 1-3; and n is 1-50). The living random copolymers can be obtained by copolymerizing the comonomers A and B with the use of an initiator system composed of a mono- or difunctional initiator and said ligand.
